Ocural Herpes is just another name for herpes of the eye, afflicted by the herpes simplex virus Type 1. Closed to a million people in the US have Ocural Herpes and the numbers are growing yearly.

In most cases, the virus will infect the cornea. This corneal infection is called Herpes Keratitis. If only the top layer of the cornea is infected, the healing will complete with a scar. If infection involves deeper layers, it may lead to scar of the cornea and loss of vision. In rare cases, the virus many infect the inside of the eyes (Herpes Uveitis) or the retina (Herpes Retinitis). Permanent blindness will occur when left untreated.

Once a person have ocural herpes, usually contacted during their early childhood, they face recurrences during their adult life as this cannot be prevented or predicted. The herpes simplex virus have a knack of laying dormant in the nerves and can be triggered off at any time.

Treatment of ocural herpes depends on the location and severity. Those with top cornea infection need to apply eye drops or ophthalmic ointments that are antiviral to attack the viruses. Those with deeper cornea infections, steroids (in the forms of drops) may help decrease inflammation and cornea scarring. Taking oral antiviral medication like "Acyclovir" will help fight the virus from within our body..
