Herpes Zoster is the name of a viral infection caused by the chicken virus. It is also known as shingles or zoster. Hence the name Herpes Zoster.
When a person has had chicken pox, the virus remains dormant in the body nerve cells. If there's a weakness in the body's immunity system, the virus may reactivate and cause herpes zoster.
Reasons for the weakened immunity include cancers, leukemia or lymphoma and AIDS. Patient undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, taking certain drugs during an organ transplant or using cortisone for a long period are susceptible candidates. They are also common in new born and older people, too.
Symptoms of herpes zoster include itching, tingling in the area for about three days red rashes appeared. Headache or fever maybe present. The rashes soon turns into blisters which last for several weeks. It look yellow or bloody before turning into scab and finally disappear. You can expect pain during the blistering period. However the pain, numbness, itching and tingling can continue for months or years even when the skin have healed.
Herpes Zoster is common on the buttocks and trunk. It also appear on the face (facial herpes), eye area, arm or leg where nerves are located. Take prompt action to treat all symptoms immediately.
