Genital herpes symptons may not show in about 80 percent of those infected with the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Some may initially have aches, mild fever, irritation and pain or tingling effects in the genitals. The redness area on the genitals then develop into groups of small blisters that erupt in crops over the next one or two weeks. The blisters contain cloudy or clear fluid and burst to form shallow, painful ulcers that then form crusts except in mucosal areas. Most would have healed by the third week.

The area around the anus and buttocks may also be affected. There may be discharge from the vagina or urethra. Pain on passing urine is a common genital herpes symptom. The lymph nodes in the groin may be swollen and painful to touch.

The genital herpes symptoms and signs are milder and of a shorter duration when there is a recurrence of both HSV type 1 and type 2. The lesions usually occur on one side and often recur at the same site.

If you suspect any blister as a genital herpes symptom, it can be scraped or swabbed by your doctor to send to the laboratory to confirm the diagnosis.

Blood tests cannot show whether a person can infect another with HSV. However, it can tell if a person has been infected at any time with HSV, and the type of HSV, whether HSV1, HSV2 or both.

If genitals herpes symptoms are found on your genital areas, anus or buttock, you should take immediate steps to treat it.
